Dar-es-Salaam - Quarta 17 Outubro 2018 - Celebration of the World Day in Tanzania

Conte-nos como foi o evento

The World Day for Overcoming Extreme Poverty was celebrated on Saturday, October 20, 2018, at the Mozambique-Tanzania Centre for International Relations (commonly known as the Diplomacy University). It is a centre that trains people in diplomacy and international relations. ATD Fourth World Tanzania is connected with this centre through a teacher who teaches there and who also participates in research on ATD’s Dimensions of Poverty Research Project.

Approximately 70 people were present at the event: families, young people, friends of the Movement, representatives of this university centre, as well as representatives of public and non-public organizations.

At the heart of the event was the various testimonies shared by the families (see here for an example), after which the representatives of two associations, TASAO (Tanzanian Student Achievement Organisation), and IWAPOA (Iloganzala Women against Poverty Association) with whom ATD has links, as well as the local government representative of the sector where the office of ATD is located responded positively by sharing their own stories about how they are fighting poverty with people experiencing it.

As part of the celebration, the Tanzanian Movement Youth Group performed a play it wrote that tells the story of the oppression experienced by poor families and how the life of extreme poverty is intimately linked to disrespect for human rights: "The poor person is so fragile that he cannot even defend his human dignity or keep what he has most dear, or what he likes most”.

Music was also featured through a group of musicians named "JITAMBUE GROUP", a song specially written by a woman activist of the Movement, Mrs. Fabiness, as well as a modern dance performed by the group of ATD Young Friends in Dar es Salaam.

Another member of IWAPOA, who is a lawyer, said that thanks to the performance of the play, she was able to make the link between poverty and the violation of human rights. The speakers and all those present  in this World Day event were touched by what was shared.

The representative of the university invited ATD to return to the university to talk about the Movement, as many people there do not know about its unique philosophy and approach to the struggle of overcoming extreme poverty. He remarked that he himself had learned a lot from all the testimonies.

The representatives of TASAO and IWAPOA expressed their desire to meet the people who work in the quarries to chat with them and to see to what extent together we could imagine projects that could be of support to them.
